The High Point of Luxury
By Janet Silvera
Hospitality Jamaica Coordinator
Less than a month ago, president and CEO of the Leon H. Sullivan Foundation, Hope Masters was addressing leaders from across the globe in the European city of Amsterdam.
Her topic centered on diversity, economic empowerment and social responsibility, areas integral to continuation of a legacy left by her father, the late Leon H. Sullivan, a Baptist minister, a civil rights leader and social activist, who focused on the creation of job-training opportunities for African-Americans.
The power broker that heads a company chaired by former United States (US) Ambassador/Andrew Young dropped anything that resembled work for the holidays, picked up her keys and unlocked the doors to her three-bedroom luxurious penthouse at The Palmyra, the country's newest resort.
"This is my retirement home. I always told myself I wanted to retire in Jamaica," she told Hospitality Jamaica.
Masters, who lives in Washington, DC, in the US is one of the first to take up residence at the property which threw open its doors in December.
"I knew when they (the developers) were putting up the Palmyra project and decided to buy here. I love Jamaica so much," said Masters glowingly, as she spoke of the country she has been visiting since age 15 when this unwritten love affair started.
The relationship has blossomed, bearing some exciting fruits have been sewn and one of them is a Jamaican husband, the renowned lobbyist Ambassador Carlton Masters.
Complemented by Jamaican roots from a grandmother she proudly speaks of, the only thing left for Hope Masters to do is move her furniture to Jamaica.
"But there is no need, my new home comes fully furnished and the staff here will fill your refrigerator with whatever you need," she boasted, giving Hospitality Jamaica a sneak preview of the colours that she tags, "great" and the fixtures that are first class and First World.
"It's like a Five-star hotel all the way through; even the elevators have mahogany lining them," she revealed, adding that the kitchen safely fell into the category, "state of the art".
THE PENTHOUSE
Although her husband didn't wish to be part of the spotlight during this interview, Masters said he felt it was important to make significant investment in his country.
Hope Masters, her husband and five children, who flew in from all parts of the world, spent Christmas and the New Year at their new home.
